Dr. Wilkie obtained his DVM from the University of Guelph (1984), interned at the University of Pennsylvania and received his MS and DACVO in 1988 from Ohio State University. He served as Professor at Ohio State University (1988-2018), Veterinary Clinical Science Department Chair (2015-2018) and is now Professor Emeritus. Dr. Wilkie trained 21 ACVO/ECVO residents, 20 graduate students and over 34 ophthalmologists from 12 countries. Dr. Wilkie is author of 105 articles, 104 abstracts and 46 book chapters, served as textbook editor, reviewer for 25 Veterinary and Human ophthalmology and research journals and serves on the Editorial Board of 9 journals. He is past chairperson of the ACVO, Examination Committee and Past-President for the ACVO.
He is currently Editor and Chief, Veterinary Ophthalmology. He has presented seminars in the over 26 countries, twice been nominated for the Norden Distinguished Teacher Award and for the Merck/AgVet Award for Creativity in Teaching. He received the OTS Alumni Gamma Award (2000), the Dr. Charles W. Fox Award for Distinguished Teaching (2012), and the National Gamma Award for Distinguished Service (2014). He was awarded the NAVC - Equine Speaker of the Year Award (2013), the AAVC Faculty Achievement Award (2017), the OSU Veterinary Medicine Alumni Society Recognition Award (2019) and the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine Distinguished Alumni Award (2021).
